How to create Tab Island
Create automatically
When you enable the automatic feature as instructed above, Tab Islands are automatically created when you click on a link leading to another website. The browser will keep the new page connected to the original page in a tab island, helping tabs within a browsing session or by topic to be kept together for easy management.
Create manually
Besides enabling automatic features, Opera allows you to create tab groups as you like, by:
- Drag and Drop: Hold and drag one tab onto another tab to create a new tab group.
- Select multiple tabs: Hold down the Ctrl key (on macOS: Cmd) and click the tabs you want to group. Or, click the first tab, hold down the Shift key, then click the last tab to select all the tabs in between. Next, right-click and select 'Create tab island' from the context menu.
How to manage Tab Islands
Each tab group acts as a separate unit, making it easy to work with related tabs. You can right-click a tab group to perform the following tasks:
- Refreshes the content of all tabs in the group.
- Copy the web addresses of all tabs.
- Move a tab group to another workspace (Workspaces) in Opera.
- Mute or close individual tabs in the group.
- Save tabs to a specific folder on the Start page or Pinboard for quick access later.
How to use keyboard shortcuts on Tab Islands
Opera also provides some useful keyboard shortcuts to manage tab groups more effectively:
Collapse/Expand tab groups
Click the color bar to the left of the tab group to collapse all tabs into a single tab. Click the color bar again to expand the tabs again.
Create new tab
Use the keyboard shortcut 'Alt + T' to create a new tab inside the currently selected tab group. If the tab group doesn't already exist, this shortcut will automatically create a new group along with the new tab. Alternatively, you can click the “+” icon inside the tab group to create a new tab.
Preview tab groups
Hover over the tab group's color bar to see the thumbnail content of the tabs inside. From here, you can close individual tabs or close an entire group of tabs at once.
Benefits of Tab Islands
Using Tab Islands brings many benefits to your browsing experience:
- Grouping tabs by topic makes it easier to find what you need and avoid being overwhelmed by too many open tabs.
- Collapsed tab groups help free up space on the browser window, providing a cleaner interface.
- Shortcuts and context menus help you quickly work with tab groups and tabs within.
