Eamr hard drive is for large businesses
Although consumers have gradually forgotten mechanical hard drive, data centers are still looking for higher capacity hard drives. That is why Western Digital (WD) has developed new drives for businesses, which are being developed by WD called “EPMR” (Energy-ASISTED PERPENDICULAR MAGETIC RECORDING).
In July 2020, Western Digital announced its new drives, including Gold Enterprise 16 and 18 TB drives, and an EAMR Ultrastar drive with a huge 20 TB capacity.
It is an extremely large amount of capacity encapsulated in an equally attractive drive. Unfortunately, you can’t put this 3.5 -inch monster in your device in the present time. Because of this time, these animals belong to large businesses.
However, for new technology enthusiasts, EPMR is really noticeable.
What are the hard drive manufacturers pursuing?
Each component in the computer is improved by engineers. When it comes to CPU, they often want to shrink the size and increase the clock. However, when it comes to the hard drive, the focus is still stuffing more data bits and the same disc size.
The hard drive consists of some components, but there are two most important things that are data containing data, and data readers.
Hard drive saves data using binary system. Data recorder will move on rotation and use the magnetic field to record data according to the form corresponding to the number 0 and 1.
People often compare the hard drive with the vinyl video recording machine. The record contains audio and is given a specific point to get data. So, EAMR appears aimed at solving this by allowing to write closer bits in the drive (in other words, write closer bits together). The WD drive applies an electric current to the recorder while it is still active. This creates an additional magnetic field, which helps create a more appropriate signal. It also means that the data can be recorded in the drive more accurately.
When the data is recorded in the drive more accurately, it can pack more bits per inch (BPI) in the same surface. This is why EAMR is a big step for the hard drive: the activity is more accurate, which means being able to record more data on the disk, increasing its area density.
However, EAMR is not an independent progress, it is only one of the features that work together to help increase the hard drive capacity. Another major progress on the new WD Gold drive is the three -state transmission (TSA). This mechanical solution is more accurate than the reader/record on the disc.
Over the years, drive manufacturers have made other progress to increase the efficiency of the drive. At some point, they will create thinner disks to stuff more disks into the drive of the same size.
When that has grown as much as possible, companies like WD will bring it to a new level by creating a helium -filled space for the disks. This reduces friction and temperature inside the drive, making the drive more energy saving.
All this will help you put more disks on the same drive. WD has also improved this process, from 7 plates in 2013 to 9 plates in the present.
Although it is an important step, Eamr still works with other technologies to increase the capacity of the drives.
Only for businesses (in the present)
Although large hard drives are an attractive prospect for personal computers, it has not yet reached the amount we use. Although this may change in a few more years. Helium -filled drives are also a feature for businesses, but they reached consumers about three years later. You can find them in drives with a capacity of 12 TB or more, like some WD external hard drives for example.

No need for NAS, desktop computer has a good capacity already. Just a few years ago, a 1 or 2 TB drive was a big problem, but now, you can buy drive 6 or 8 TB easily. With that thought to many NVMe and SSD drivers, you can also buy quite a lot of hard drives.
However, the concept of 16 TB or more on a drive is an attractive idea. It seems that despite the incredible performance of SSD NVMe and SATA, the future of muscle hard drive is still open.
