Since so many Instagram users use GIFs in their stories and chats, Facebook says integrating Giphy with Instagram will help those users figure out the best way to express their feelings.
The company also recently invested $5.7 billion in telecommunications service Jio in India to drive the digital revolution in India.
What is Giphy?
For users of Facebook, Twitter and other social media messaging sites, GIFs became popular and increasingly used as a form of expression. For example, instead of using the Internet slang “LOL” to “laugh out loud,” users could attach a GIF video clip of someone laughing.
Giphy was founded in 2013 by Alex Chung and Jace Cooke, who decided to create a database of GIFs that could be used in place of words to express emotions. They built a search engine, compiled a database of about 15,000 GIFs and created the Giphy website. The database and number of users has grown significantly, with up to 65 million users accessing more than 3 billion GIFs per month.
