Continuing the legacy, Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system has monopolized the market since its launch in 2015. It recently hit the milestone of 1 billion active devices – a dream that was delayed by more than two years.
Windows 10 sales are falling, statistics show
But it seems that Windows 10’s success in the operating system market is slowly waning. Speaking of numbers, the desktop market share for Windows OS (all versions) decreased by 2% between March 2020 and April 2020.
OS | March 2020 | April 2020 | Up and down |
Windows | 89.21 | 86.92 | -2.29% |
macOS | 8.94 | 9.75 | +0.81% |
Linux Distros | 1.36 | 2.87 | +1.51% |
Chrome OS | 0.40 | 0.40 | 0% |
While those users have moved to macOS, Apple has seen its market share increase by 0.8% over the same period. Surprisingly, however, Linux distributions' desktop market share has increased by 1.5%, nearly double that of macOS.
Furthermore, if we compare the data from April 19 (Windows: 88.22%) and April 20 (Windows: 86.92%), there is a decrease of 1.3% over the past twelve months. That means some Windows users want to find another operating system.
However, Microsoft's favorite operating system dominates 88% of all desktops and laptops. Meanwhile, when it comes to Windows 10, its user share dropped from 57.34% in March to 56.03% in April 2020.
One important thing to note here is that the data compiled by NetMarketShare does not include all the computers in the world.
Here, the numbers published by StatCounter are enough to conclude that Windows users are switching to macOS and Linux systems.
Accordingly, during the period from March to April 2020, Windows saw its market share decline, while the numbers skyrocketed for macOS and Linux.
So this information can be used to get a rough estimate of how popular different operating systems are today.
Why do Windows 10 users switch to other operating systems?
When it comes to market share numbers, increases and decreases in the chart are a common occurrence. However, if you want to list the reasons behind this significant drop, there could be a few reasons.
First, the Windows 7 operating system reached its end of life in January this year. That means users who can no longer receive security updates may be looking for some good alternatives to Windows 7. They may have found Linux and macOS to be better options than Windows 10.
Another reason could be a faulty software update. Windows 10 users have been installing updates for a long time without encountering some annoying BSOD (blue screen of death) errors.
Although Microsoft is making a sincere effort to test Windows 10 2004 but it remains to be seen whether it can stop many people from abandoning Windows in the coming months.
Alternatively, it could simply be a case of users wanting to try something new. Apple's MacOS is quite feature-rich and there are some pretty great Linux distributions out there. For Vietnam, users are also turning to experimentation. CyOS – Viettel operating system.
