Second leg is a term to describe a match or tournament where two teams will meet twice. The first match will be the first leg, the second match will be the return leg. The difference in goals and goals of both matches will be the final result to determine the winner. If goals and conceded goals are equal, a penalty kick can be taken or the team that scores more at the opponent’s home field will win.

What is the first leg, the return leg?
Sometimes matches are decided over two games, or the first leg, with one team playing at home first and then playing away in the second. So we could see these kind of matches in the knockout stages of the World Cup and Champions League and of course in the playoffs to get to the ongoing AFF cup tournaments.
Each match is called a ‘leg’ so there is a first leg and a return leg which is sometimes referred to as a ‘Return’. It seems that having the home field advantage in the second leg is a good thing when the home fans can help the home team improve their game.
For example: Vietnam and Thailand yesterday (January 13, 2022) at My Dinh Stadium is the first leg of the final, on January 16, 2022, Vietnam will meet Thailand again in the second leg. The match was held at Thammasat Stadium.
- In the first leg at home, Vietnam drew 2-2 with Thailand.
- In the second leg, if Vietnam wins Thailand, it will win the championship. But if Vietnam draws Thailand 1-1, Vietnam loses (because Thailand scored 2 goals at home Vietnam), if Vietnam draws 2-2 with Thailand, it will play extra time, if it continues to draw, Penalty kick.
