Manifest V3: A Step Forward for Security, a Step Back for uBlock Origin?

The transition to Manifest V3, a major change in Chrome's extension architecture, is causing a lot of controversy. Google officially retired Manifest V2 and pushed for the transition to Manifest V3 late last year, citing increased security.

This change is now rolling out to stable channel users in Chrome 127, impacting many ad blocking extensions, including the “hero” uBlock Origin.

So what does Manifest V3 change? In simple terms, Manifest V3 limits the ability of extensions to execute remote code. According to Google, this helps prevent the execution of unverified malicious code, thereby improving user security. However, the consequence is that extensions like uBlock Origin, which rely on remote code to function properly, will be affected.

uBlock Origin is facing the risk of “extinction” on Chrome

More than 30 million Chrome users who use uBlock Origin are at risk of having to say goodbye to their favorite extension. According to Google's roadmap, uBlock Origin will soon be automatically disabled via an update.

While Google will allow users to re-enable the extension for a limited time via settings, uBlock Origin will eventually be removed from Chrome entirely, leaving users with two difficult choices: either switch to another browser, or find an alternative ad-blocking extension.

How to continue using uBlock Origin on Chrome

Luckily, there is still a way to “save” uBlock Origin on Chrome, at least for a while longer. A policy called “ExtensionManifestV2Availability“, designed for businesses, extends support for Manifest V2 extensions by one year, until June 2025. This policy works on Windows, macOS, and Linux, requiring Chrome version 110 or later and Edge version 123 or later.

Reddit user TeamDJ discovered a way to enable this policy via the Registry Editor on Windows. Here are the step-by-step instructions:

Step 1: Open Registry Editor by pressing Windows + R key combination and typing regedit.

Step 2: Navigate to:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome

Step 3: With the Chrome folder selected on the left, select Edit/New/DWORD (32-Bit Value).

Step 4: Name the new entry ExtensionManifestV2Availability and press Enter.

Step 5: Right-click on the newly created entry (ExtensionManifestV2Availability) and select Modify. Set the value to 2 and press OK.

Step 6: You're done. Test it by opening Chrome and pasting chrome://policy into the address bar, then pressing Enter. You should see the ExtensionManifestV2Availability policy with a value of 2.

Conclusion

While the future of uBlock Origin on Chrome is unclear, with temporary solutions like using the ExtensionManifestV2Availability policy, users can still continue Use uBlock Origin on Chrome to enjoy the benefits of this great ad blocking extension. However, finding a long-term and sustainable alternative is also necessary. Hopefully, the uBlock Origin community and Google will find a common voice to bring users the best possible browsing experience.
