Phishing detection feature on Google Chrome
Google has released a new feature to help you avoid Phishing that will send URLs of less popular websites to Google. The Google Chrome browser already has a technology called Safe Browsing that checks each URL visited against a list of phishing sites that Google collects. For privacy reasons, this check is made not available on the user’s computer. The list is updated every 30 minutes.
Every day, “Safe Browsing” discovers thousands of new unsafe websites and adds them to the blacklist. The list is updated approximately every 30 minutes. Chrome will check the URL of each website you visit or file you download against this list. If you visit a new URL, Chrome will check the first 32bit SHA-256 hash of the URL and compare it with the existing Google listing.
This measure can check the visited URL in real time to detect Phishing. When a Chrome user visits a website, the browser checks to see if the address is in the Safe Websites list. This is an archive of thousands of websites that Google has confirmed to be safe. If the Web page you visit is not on Google’s safe list, Chrome will send that address to Google and warn the user that it is a Phishing site.
You need to manually enable the Phishing detection option on Google Chrome.
