Overview of lightning protection system

Conductive devices are usually made of metal that conducts electricity well. You can replace the copper stake with a gold or silver stake. Gold and silver conduct electricity much better and are much more durable than copper, but the cost is quite high. So people will use copper metal to save costs.

Resistance reduction method

Resistance is ability to impede current of a certain metal and can be changed. If you want good lightning protection, you should find a way to reduce the resistance to the lowest level, for easier current flow and faster grounding.

After driving the piles and grounding, spread the salt and chemicals down. Doing so will reduce the resistance to the lowest level so that current flows more easily and faster. The entire lightning protection and grounding system of the building will be connected to this copper pile.

Having done the above two things, the resistance of the system will be measured again. As standard, the resistor should be less than 1 Ohm (Ohm). If over 1 Ohm, it is still against lightning, but cannot conduct all the lightning current to the ground. The residual electricity will stay and harm your device.

If you study electricity, you will understand the terrible harm of letting excess current flow through the device. If you are a large company, you will suffer terrible damage to all the equipment. Maintenance and repair costs are not small, so be careful in this lightning protection system a bit.

Why is there a lightning protection system but the device still burns?

I noticed that many lightning protection systems are poorly constructed or so many years do not maintain and re-measure the resistance. Because if used for a long time, chemicals and metals will lose their effect, causing the resistance to increase again. Periodic inspection and maintenance of the system is required to keep the resistance to a minimum.

Many IT friends ask me, why I have a lightning protection system but still have equipment fires. That’s when the system resistance rises above 5 ohm. Lightning protection will be completely lost. When lightning strikes, the current will go straight to all your equipment and destroy it.

Even if the lightning protection system is perfectly constructed, there is still a risk of being struck by lightning through the power supply and telecom wires (internet+phone). This means that lightning strikes the wires off the pole and then propagates through the power supply into your entire system.

Same goes for telecom lines. So you still have to invest in lightning protection equipment right at the source for power and telecom. Lightning arrester works based on lightning protection system. So if the system fails, the filter will also be lost.

What is the 3rd wire and what does it do?

In addition, the lightning protection system has a “grounding” effect for electrical equipment. This means that the next system (grounding, grounding) will be connected to this lightning protection system.

Many people misunderstand the electrical system or equipment that has a grounding system. The 3rd wire (blue wire) will be lightning protection, but in reality it has nothing to do with lightning protection.

If you let lightning reach that third wire, you’ve damaged most of the equipment. But this “grounding” effect is extremely useful:

There are two ways of construction

So where is not correct?

This 3-wire system must go through from the power outlet to the source and connect to the building’s lightning protection system. In the process of running 3 wires, only 1 place going 2 wires is a failure. For example, some sockets have 3 pins, but when opened, they only have 2 pins. The other foot is the foot on the ground, it does not fight anywhere.

The system uses an iron box, system the same goes for the iron pipe that is wired for the third wire. As long as there is a place that can be replaced with a plastic box or plastic pipe (for ease of use, cheaper cost) is to throw away the whole system.
