You may not know that new Messenger features like money transfers, video calling and better encryption, have been included in Facebook Messenger. Here’s what you should know before you start texting.
While most people use Messenger on their phones, you can also text Messenger on your computer without having to open Facebook.com all day. Instead, try visiting Messenger.com, which has more messaging functionality than on Facebook. In addition, Messenger also has version installed on the computer as separate software.
Messaging with other Chat services
Messenger launched as Facebook Chat in 2008. A few years ago Facebook spent billions to buy Instagram and WhatsApp. But now that the social network owns all three services, the company has merged them together. Now, if you’re using Messenger, you can talk to people on Instagram without switching apps.
To set access between the two apps, navigate to Settings > Privacy > Send Messages . Here you can choose whether Instagram friends or acquaintances can message you via Messenger.
Call or Video call
Few people now use their phones for texting or calling with a SIM because it costs more money than using Messenger to make phone and video calls on a phone or computer. Just click phone icon or camera icon. The only requirement is that all parties have an internet connection.
Send audio messages
Instead of calling directly, you can also send audio messages to your friends. Simply tap the microphone button on your mobile device to start recording, then use drag and drop to cancel or send. In the PC app, you click the + button and select Record a Voiceover, then click the X button to delete or choose to send.
Create Chat room
To compete with group video chat services like Zoom, Facebook introduced Messenger Room to create an Online meeting room. Create a room and invite your friends where you can share your screen, play games or watch videos together. All Watch Together content is available through Facebook Watch, so you can watch all your video clips, TV shows, and series from within the chat.
These rooms can be left empty at all times for people to enter or open only at specific times for gatherings. And thanks to more integration, it works on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp.
Create a secret message on Messenger
If you’re looking to share information you don’t want to fall into the wrong hands, start a Secret Conversation, using End-to-End Encryption Protocol.
To send a โsecretโ message, tap the New Message icon at the top right of the home screen and tap Secret (iOS) or toggle the secret icon to the on position (Android).
Or you go to the spot where you’re messaging with a friend, tap the person’s name at the top of the screen and select Go to Secret Conversations. Secret chats appear in different threads than regular Messenger chats.
While in a Secret Conversation, you can also set your messages to expire after a certain amount of time. Tap the stopwatch icon to add an expiry time of 5, 10 or 30 seconds, 1, 5, 10 or 30 minutes, 1, 6 or 12 hours, or up to a day. The watch won’t start until they see the notification. You can also choose Turn off to show messages in Secret Conversations.
Create Disappearing Messages
If you just want a little extra privacy without encryption, Messenger’s newest feature is disappearing messages. Called Disappear mode -Vanish Mode. Simply swipe up inside the chat to turn on the disappearing message. All your messages, videos, and gifs will disappear once you close the Messenger app. This mode also supports screenshot notifications.
When you don’t want to use Disappearing Mode anymore, swipe back on the screen or tap the Disappear Mode off button at the top of your conversation.
Create Stories and Video Messages
Messenger has many of the same functions as Instagram, meaning you can compose and send video messages within the app. On mobile devices, tap the camera icon and hold the center icon to record a video. You can also upload your clips with filters and other customizations.
Like Facebook and Instagram, you can also create stories โ short collections of videos and images โ in the Messenger app. You can view existing stories in the mobile app in People> storythen create your own story by tapping Add to story. If not, create content and then choose your story.
Once the story has been published, the story will remain visible for 24 hours. You can adjust the settings to make sure that only certain people see your story, or that the story disappears after a certain amount of time.
Create a vote in Messenger
The voting function on Messenger is similar to Zalo to help you create questions into a series of answers for friends in the group to vote.
Tap the four dots (Android) or plus (iOS) icon on the left and tap Opinion poll. Enter your question, add a choice, and tap Create Poll.
Transfers
Now Messenger also allows you to send and request money transfers through Facebook Pay.
On mobile, tap your photo at the top of the app and select Facebook Pay to add your Visa/MasterCard or link your PayPal account. You can also add a PIN or fingerprint associated with financial transactions for extra security.
Then, from within the conversation, select the four-dot icon (on mobile) or the + icon (web and iOS) to open additional messaging options. Select icon $then enter the amount to send or request.
Turn off “Online” mode on Messenger
If you value your privacy, Messenger has a number of features that can help you secure your account, in addition to Facebook’s own privacy features. Active Status will let your friends know if you’re Online or Offline; A green dot will appear on your profile icon when you. If you don’t want to show your status, tap your chat head in the top left corner, select Operation Status and Turn off it goes.
If you turn off your status, you won’t be able to see other people’s statuses either.
You can access other privacy settings in the Privacy tab, where you can block your account, manage who can see your story, and how the app handles message requests.
Set Messenger as default SMS app
If you prefer Facebook Messenger to Android’s SMS messaging app, you can use it to receive both SMS and Messenger messages. This means you’ll be able to receive text messages through the Messenger app, just like when someone is chatting with you. Tap your chat header and select SMS, then toggle the On button.
Check if the message has been read
You can check the status of your messages by tapping them inside the chat window. Messenger will notify you when a message has been sent, then notify you when it has been delivered. The message will say โSeenโ after being read.
If you don’t want others to know if you’ve read the message, use the widget J2Security Please.
Submit your current location
You can send your exact location to anyone you’re messaging on the mobile app by tapping the four-dot (Android) or plus (iOS) icon and selecting Location (Android) or location icon (iOS).
Facebook will open a map and display your current location; share it for 60 minutes or drop the pin at a specific point. Friends will receive a link to your location on Messenger. You’ll have to give Messenger permission to share your location in the background for that period of time.
Dark Mode
Messenger lets you name chats and assign them a specific color theme or emoji of their own. Access this functionality by tapping on a contact’s profile and selecting Subject, Emoji or Nickname. You can also choose to switch the Messenger interface from white to black by turning on the dark mode. Tap your chat head icon in the top left and enable Dark Mode.
Create your own emoji
Android users can add variety to their emoji by tapping the chat head in the top left corner and selecting Photos & media > Icons emoticon and choose default skin tone. This function is directly integrated into iOS, you just need to press and hold an emoji and a menu will pop up with different skin tone options.
There are some simple emojis that won’t do the trick. On Android or the web, tap or click the smiley, then select and hold the emoji of your choice. When you hold it, the emoji will zoom in and out.
If you hold it for too long, the icon will start to shake before it deflates back to its normal, smaller size. People who get these emojis on their iPhone will see them in their normal size.
Message recall
Facebook Messenger allows users message recall up to 10 minutes after submission. Perform this action by touching and holding the sent message select More -> Undo Delete. A pop-up message will ask if you want to โRevoke with everyoneโ or โRevoke with youโ.
In the conversation, a gray note will appear saying โYou have not sent a messageโ or โYou have deleted the messageโ. To remove that, press and hold it and select Remove. After the 10-minute window has ended, you can only remove one message from your view; other people in the chat will still see it.
Add additional Facebook accounts
If you want to add additional accounts to Messenger, go to Settings> Switch Accounts> Add Account to easily switch between Facebooks. You can also create a new account from this menu.
Messenger Kids
Your child may be using TikTok, Snapchat, or Instagram. But if your kids want to chat with someone on Facebook such as grandma or grandpa and distant loved ones you can set them up with a more secure version of the social network, Messenger Kids (iOS, Android). Parents control who their kids can talk to, and Facebook added updates last year to give parents more insight into what their kids are doing in the app.
