Adobe launches Photoshop and Illustrator versions on the Web

Few people think that an application as complex and heavy as Photoshop may appear on the web. But Adobe yesterday rolled out a web version of not only Photoshop but Illustrator as well, along with some new online experiences.

However, in order to use it, certain conditions must be met. As when Adobe launched Photoshop on iPad, it’s not the entire Photoshop and Illustrator toolkit, but web apps that let you open files and make basic edits. They also allow you to comment and share work with collaborators. The Photoshop web app is introduced as a beta and Illustrator on the web is a private beta accessible only through invitation.

Web versions based on the same Cloud Documents are required in the iPad versions of the Creative Cloud software. Adobe has brought its Creative Cloud management application to the web. The two brand new online features you access are Creative Cloud Spaces and Creative Cloud Canvas.

Creative Cloud Spaces is an online content repository for your team, with collaborators and shared content in the same interface. You can access it from the Creative Cloud web interface or in Photoshop, Illustrator, XD, and Fresco on your desktop or iPad. Creative Cloud Canvas is an online collaborator workspace. According to the blog of Adobe, collaborators can “draw shapes, text, stickers, images, and working files from other Creative Cloud apps” onto the canvas the team is working on in real time.

Adobe has also tested its employees for feedback. “The Adobe Design team has been working on these new tools for the past few months, and they have changed the way we work together,” said Adobe Vice President of Design Eric Snowden. “Creating teamwork and collaboration at the heart of Creative Cloud helps manage access and create transparency for creative projects.”

App Updates: Photoshop and Illustrator

But that’s not all. Programs installed on desktop and tablet computers also get updated with some nifty new features. Tools Object Selection uses Adobe’s Sensei AI to detect all objects in the image. Another related menu option is Layer > Mask All Objectscreate separate masks for all detected objects in a layer.

Neural Filters, debuted at last year’s Max show, also enhanced. New Landscape Mixer filters allow you to change the season of your scene, from summer to fall, or to make a midday scene look like it was taken at sunset. A new AI feature is harmonization. Covered objects can be rendered using the color and tone of the filter. So if you have a portrait on one layer and a landscape on another, the colors and tones will be blended on both. Another filter, Color Transfer, allows you to apply the colors and tones of one image to another. Other Neural filters include Depth Blur, Superzoom, Style Transfer, and Colorize.

An old feature of Photoshop, Gradients, also received a major update: You now have three options: Classic, Perceptual, and Linear modes. Perceptual is based on how we perceive light.

The iPad version of Photoshop received a major update with the addition of a unique feature: Camera Raw. The inability of the iPad app to accept Camera Raw files is a big gap between the phone and PC apps.

The desktop version of Adobe Illustrator doesn’t see major updates, other than the web version mentioned earlier. It features an enhanced 3D panel with updated lights and shadows that leverage ray tracing technology and adds direct access to Adobe Substance 3D materials. The iPad version of Illustrator includes a technology preview of the Vectorize image tracking tool.

More Updates: Lightroom, Premiere Pro and After Effects

Lightroom is the favorite software of serious photographers. New Lightroom features Picsart — the ability to submit your work to a large community for them to make their own edits to your photos. This is called Community Remixing. AI features also appear in Lightroom.

Both versions of Lightroom have new masking tools, including brightness, color, and the ability to create multiple masks. There are also 2 new tools, Select Subject and Select Sky .

Adobe also recently acquired frame.io, the online video collaboration platform. And one of the coolest new updates in Premiere Pro is Simplify Sequence, which removes unused tracks, gaps, and effects for a much simpler timeline view. Format support now extends to 10-bit and HDR media from mirrorless cameras and iPhones, with color management and hardware acceleration.

Remix new, which can change song length to video length, will go into public beta at Max. In testing a similar feature in CyberLink PowerDirector, the tools depend on the music genre, so I’m also excited to see how Adobe’s new tool works.

For motion graphics, the After Effects performance boost includes multi-frame rendering, speculative preview, composition profiler, and reimagined render queue. You can see more of these features in Posts on Max.

Animation software, Adobe Character Animator, now lets you start Puppet Maker without Photoshop or Illustrator, and a lip sync tool lets your character speak text with precise mouth movements.

Fight against misinformation

Two years ago, Adobe presented a featurecontent validation, giving creators a way to verify authenticity on their work. This new tool announced at Max is called Content Credentials, a beta tool available in Photoshop that allows authors to attach secure metadata to verify the authenticity of their work.

You can visit the page web Verify (currently in beta) and upload an image file to check its authenticity. Adobe Stock, the company’s answer to ShutterStock, now also provides content validation for all content on the site. Adobe is also working with governments and stakeholders to combat scammers and create a technical standard for photo traceability.
