The mouse is an indispensable device when using a computer, especially with the Windows operating system. But sometimes, you may encounter a situation where the mouse is broken, lost connection, or cannot be operated. In those cases, you can use the keyboard as a mouse replacement, including right-clicking.
4 ways to right-click with the keyboard on Windows 11
The Menu key (or application key) is a specialized key on the keyboard, with the same function as right-clicking. This key is usually located between the right Windows key and the right Ctrl key, or between the Fn key and the right Ctrl key. This key has an icon of a menu with 3 horizontal stripes.
To use this key, simply move the mouse pointer or select an item with the keyboard, then press the Menu key. You will see a context menu appear, corresponding to the right-click operation. You can use the arrow keys to move through the menu options, and press Enter to select.
Note: This key may soon be replaced by the Copilot key in future keyboards.
Method 2: Use the key combination Shift + F10
If your keyboard doesn't have a Menu key, or you want to use another shortcut, you can use the Shift + F10 key combination to right-click with the keyboard. This is a simple shortcut and requires no further setup.
Method 3: Use the Mouse Keys feature
Windows also provides you with a feature called Mouse Keys, which allows you to enter data with the mouse from the numeric keypad (Numpad). This feature not only helps you left-click, but also helps you right-click, drag and drop, drag, or move the mouse cursor.
To enable and use this feature, you need to follow these steps:
Step 1: Go to Control Panel > Select 'Ease of Access'
Step 2: Select 'Ease of Access Center'
Step 3: In the 'Explorer all settings' section, select 'Make the mouse easier to use'
Step 4: Check the 'Turn on Mouse Keys' box then press 'Apply' to apply the changes.
You will now see the Mouse Keys icon in the system tray.
In case you see a red X, press the Numlock key to turn it on. You will hear a beep each time you turn Mouse Keys on or off.
Now, you can use the numeric keypad to right-click by pressing the minus key (-), then pressing the 5 key.
Method 4: Use Macro program
If you find using the numeric keypad to right-click too complicated, you might want to try using a macro program – It will allow you to assign a right-click action to any key on the keyboard. You can use that key to easily and quickly right-click.
One of the popular and free macro programs is AutoHotKey. Here's how you can set up and use this program:
Step 1: Download and install AutoHotKey here.
Step 2: After installation is complete, right-click on the desktop > Select New > AutoHotkey Script. You will see a new script file created.
Step 3: Give it any name, you can set it as 'Right-click' for easy remembering > Click 'Create'
Step 4: Right click on the script file, select 'Edit in Notepad'
Step 5: Delete all content in the file, and type the following line: RAlt::RButton
This line means you assign the right Alt key (RAlt) to act as the right mouse button (RButton). You can choose any other key you like, as long as you write down its key code correctly.
Some popular buttons you can refer to include: LShift or RShift, LCtrl or RCtrl,…
Step 6: After assigning the hotkey, select File and click Save and close the notepad file.
From now on, when you need to right-click with the keyboard, double-click on the command file just created above. The AutoHotKey icon will appear in the system tray, letting you know that the hotkey script is active.
This means you can use the selected hotkey to right-click. If you want to stop the script, simply select Exit when right-clicking the AutoHotKey icon in the system tray.
