What is BIN?
BIN (Bank Identification Number) is known as the bank identification number. That is, each Credit Card will have its own sequence of numbers to distinguish one bank’s card from another. BINs typically have 4 to 6 numbers printed or embossed on credit cards. The BIN is the key to determine whether a payment is valid for the payer and the bank. Features of BIN on credit cards
What is Bin? BIN is a numbering system developed by the American National Standards Institute and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to identify issuers of bank cards. The first digit of the BIN specifies an Industry Identifier, for example airline, bank or travel, and the next five digits designate the issuer or bank. Eg:
- Number 3: Cards issued by travel or entertainment agencies.
- Numbers 4 and 5: Cards issued by banks and financial institutions.
- MasterCard credit card numbers all start with the number 5, from 50** to 55**.
- Visa credit cards will start with the number 4***, and from 41*** to 49***.
- Number 6: Cards issued by banks and merchants.
- Number 7: Cards issued by oil and gas companies.
- Number 8: Cards issued by telecommunications companies.
- Number 9: Cards issued by the state.
The BIN helps the merchant determine from which bank his funds are being transferred, and the address and phone number of the bank, if the issuing bank is in the same country as the device used to make the transaction. BIN also helps to verify whether the address information provided by the customer is correct or incorrect.
Eg When paying in the US, if you use CHASE bank card with BIN 432562 but declare your address in Vietnam, your payment will be refused immediately. This case to avoid the cardholder being hacked credit card….
