Don’t know what error this is and there is no official announcement from XIAOMI. A photo used as a wallpaper (Wallpaper) will make the XIAOMI phone ineffective. You are only left with factory resets, returning the phone to its factory state. Thus, all phone data will be lost. If you want to play around, you can use this photo as a wallpaper and feel the results.

THE FACTS ABOUT THE BACKGROUND THAT CAN TURN A xiaomi phone into a ‘Brick’
Wandering on Reddit, yesterday I saw an article about Mi 9 constantly flashing the screen and automatically booting into Recovery after the user installed a photo downloaded from the internet to the phone as a wallpaper.
The story on Reddit was shared as follows:
I recently changed my phone wallpaper to this one: https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https://i.redd.it/je65fih3f5021.png&imgrefurl=https://i.reddit.com/r/Amoledbackgrounds/comments/9zs9z9/6t_rainbow
As soon as I did this my phone screen kept turning ON and OFF. It stays on for 1 second then off and on for 1 second and then off. so I can’t do anything during that time. While doing this, it vibrates twice. After 5-6 times doing this, a loading screen appeared and it gave me 3 options:
- Reboot: same thing happens
- Delete data
- Connect with MIAssistant
Can anyone help me with this error? I don’t want to erase my phone data.
* Added: Since I really needed my phone, I ended up wiping my data. Luckily I have nothing serious *
Actual test results
Because I also sell trust and doubt and with the “naughty” hobby available in my blood, I tried to download it and got quite surprising results. After setting as wallpaper, my Mi MIX 3 constantly flickers and then automatically returns to recovery mode. Rebooted 12 times but no success.
Fortunately, the device has unlocked bootloader, pre-installed TWRP, so I decided to play until the end and find a way to fix it. It’s simple, you just need to go to File Manager of TWRP and delete all files with the word “wallpaper” in the name, in 2 folders: /data/system/theme
and /data/system/users/0
then reboot and you’re done.
However, if you have been “playing stupid” and unfortunately your phone has not unlocked the bootloader, you only have to Wipe User Data (Wipe Data) in Mi-Recovery to make the phone work normally.
This error is probably caused by MIUI and is completely real. Of course, it only happens with the original image (shared in the article) and if you edit it and set it as wallpaper, nothing will happen.
If you are using a Xiaomi phone and want to test the danger of a picture causing your phone to hang, you can Download photos shared at reddit. You should back up data on Mi Cloud or to your computer before doing so. Because if your phone crashes, you will lose all your data.
