I started learning Linux in 2013 because of the Windows 8 disaster. I love it more and more not because “it’s not Windows”. Here are the top 10 reasons why I love Linux in particular order and 1 reason why I don’t like Linux.

1. Terminal
Mac and Windows both have a terminal (a window for typing in the command line), but it doesn’t offer the same user experience as Linux. Using terminal is much easier than using GUI (interface) for many tasks. That doesn’t mean you have to use the terminal if you’re using Linux, but it’s generally good at doing simple things. You can also customize your terminal with different colors and themes because Linux is very flexible.
2. Customizability
There are many ways to make Linux your own, and I don’t mean to set the wallpaper as your avatar, it will be your own. Want Dark theme? Light theme? Purple theme? Linux has both. Create keyboard shortcuts the way you want, place custom toolbars on your desktop anywhere you want, it’s all right.
Depending on your needs, you can use different desktop environments, Gnome (Ubuntu is using), Cinnamon and KDE will give you great experiences right from the start, while XFCE, Mate, LXDE and others will be much lighter and customizable. Some desktop environments are more productive than others. It all depends on what you want and need.
3. Easy to install
Some Linux distributions are notoriously difficult to install, but that’s how they protect their user base. As for the rest of the distros, it’s pretty easy to get up and running. After a few questions, the system will automatically install the operating system for you. If you want to dual boot with Windows, it will take care of that for you too.
4. Security
It may be because Linux’s market share is small, or it may be because Linux is better designed, but there are really few viruses available for Linux. In addition, the way permissions are set up also makes it much harder for malicious programs to operate. Even if there is a security hole in Linux, it will be dealt with quickly because Linux is…
5. Open source code
Anyone can take the source code of Linux and modify it to suit their needs. Open source software is also generally safer because more people can review the source code. Since so many people can see the source code, they tend to create their own versions. This is why Linux is so….
6. Lots of Linux Operating Systems
Linux has hundreds of different distributions. While this can create a very complex scene, it also provides the user with a variety of options. Are you in need of a comprehensive system? Let’s use Ubuntu. How to ensure privacy on the internet? Tails Linux is the choice for you. Are you a hacker? Kali Linux has the tools you need. If you want to tell people that you use Arch Linux you should install Arch Linux btw.
7. Free
What can we say now? Everyone loves free stuff, right? Although free, but combining the features outlined in this article, the benefits of Linux bring us a lot.
8. Compatible on almost any hardware
Linux is very lightweight. It takes up less resources than Windows. Linux is also known because it works well on very old systems. You can install and use Linux on a machine that can no longer use Windows, because it is too weak. It also doesn’t mean that Linux is only good for older machines! Most supercomputers today run Linux because it’s light and fast.
9. Suitable for developers
Except for the browser, the software that I use the most is probably VSCode and Sublimetext. Yes, VSCode works in Linux as does ATOM, and all the JetBrains tools… There are many IDEs and compilers available on Linux. And the thing that probably helps me the most in the development process is definitely the terminal.
10. Lots of software
Lots of software available and super easy to set up. You can install the software on the terminal, or most major distributors have a software manager like the AppStore that allows you to install the software using the GUI. There are tons of games, productivity apps, and more. Some are great and some are bad, but you have a choice!
11. Gaming on Linux
Play games on Linux is becoming very popular. Steam runs great on Linux with most of their games available on Linux. There are also other methods to get games on Linux and Anthony from Linus Tech Tips thinks Linux is the future of gaming! Gaming hardware also works great on Linux.
What is Linux missing?
The only place where Linux really falls short is the availability of specific software. Higher level “creative” software like Photoshop and audio and video editing software are not available on Linux. Normally there are other alternatives on Linux but they are not comparable to the original.
This doesn’t affect me personally because I don’t need those softwares, but I understand the pain of someone who wants to use a software but it doesn’t work on Linux and you can’t quit Linux without to the guest operating system.
Conclusion
Linux is an operating system that is much more powerful than it was 5 years ago. As Linux continues to grow, I wonder if more and more people will accept Linux as their main operating system for everyday use? Although Linux is still limited, it is still improving with each version.
