Ubuntu is an open kernel-based operating system Linux. Nowadays, to save licensing costs, companies often prioritize installing Ubuntu to replace Windows. The purpose of Ubuntu’s existence is to provide a stable, regularly updated operating system for users and focus on convenience and ease of installation. On this operating system, there is LibreOffice which is a pre-installed free Office suite including Writer, Calc, Impress, etc. Currently, Ubuntu does not support Vietnamese percussion. This article will guide you to install and configure iBus-Unikey to type Vietnamese on the latest Ubuntu.

Install iBus-Unikey to type Vietnamese on Ubuntu
Step 1: You open the Terminal application on Ubuntu. If you can’t find it, there is a magnifying glass at the top, you just need to search to find it, if not, look for the image below:
Step 2: Click In the Terminal window type the command:
sudo apt-get install ibus-unikey
Press Enter -> Enter your machine’s password -> Press enter.
Keep pressing y to continue with the installation.
Step 3: Type command sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-vn/ppa
Step 4: Type command sudo apt-get update
Step 5: Type command ibus restart
Press Enter and exit.
Summary of commands for you to copy easily:
sudo apt-get install ibus-unikey
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-vn/ppa
sudo apt-get update
ibus restart
iBus-Unikey Configuration
Then you restart your computer and go to Settings of Ubuntu. Select Region & Language in section Input Source click on the + . sign
Select Vietnamese -> Vietnamese (Unikey) -> Add
Now in the right corner of the screen will appear the Vietnamese typing icon of iBus-Unikey. You right click and select Full Setup… to proceed with configuring features for iBus-Unikey such as Telex or VNI typing, unicode encoding…
Then you reboot one more time and enjoy. Perhaps many of you who are new to Ubuntu will wonder why you have to reboot many times, it is because of its operating system, not because of the applications, it can also be said that this is the biggest weakness of Ubuntu. ubuntu compared to windows when every time you install an app or change something, you have to restart, which is quite time consuming.
How to turn off red underlined text when using LibreOffice
By default, LibreOffice will turn on English spell checking when you edit documents. If you type Vietnamese in LibreOffice with iBus-Unikey by default, the software will understand this is not English, so it will mark the spelling error. Since you need to turn off spell check, do the following:
Open LibreOffice and select Menu Tools -> Options
Select item Language Setting -> Writing Aids -> uncheck the section Check spelling as you type
