Intel today announced its flagship desktop processor Core i9-13900KS, which is a special edition model of the 13900K. The 13900KS is the world’s first desktop processor to hit a maximum turbo frequency of 6.0 GHz straight out of the box.

Team blue recently launched 4th generation Xeon and Xeon Max processors and today marks the launch of another CPU in the Raptor Lake and Core i9 series, the Core i9-13900KS. Here are all the specs for this new CPU:
The main difference between the 13900K and the 13900KS is the 200 MHz boost on top clock speed from the already impressive 5.8 GHz to 6.0 GHz. This is achieved by treated silicon, which ensures that only the finest parts are put into production on the 13900KS. The 13900KS has a higher base power limit of 150W compared to the 13900K’s 125W, and while the maximum turbo limit is 253W, the 13900KS supports Ultra High Power Delivery Profiles, raising the power limit up to 320W to help achieve higher clocks
Although Intel claims that the limit is achievable with standard motherboards using standard AIO liquid coolers and the 6.0GHz figure is achievable without overclocking, Intel’s test video shows the 13900KS only hit that number on a few P cores for short durations in the 7-Zip benchmark time.
Intel Core i9-13900KS: 24 cores, 320W . power
Intel claims the i9-13900KS is the world’s fastest processor. Here are all the specs:
- The maximum turbo frequency is up to 6.0 GHz.
- 24 cores in Intel’s hybrid architecture (8 Performance cores and 16 Efficiency cores), 32 threads.
- 150W processor base power. 320W limit for overclocking.
- Supports up to DDR5 5600 MT/s and DDR4 3200 MT/s.
- Compatible with Z790 and Z690 motherboards with BIOS update.
In a nutshell, the 13900KS is 13900K but has a P core that can be overclocked to 6.0 GHz. A limited edition variant of the processor will be available starting January 12 and will cost $699, $100 more than the 13900K.
If you’re not familiar with Intel’s naming scheme, the words K, KF, KS, etc., here’s what they mean.
Meaning of last letter in Intel CPU
Characters | Meaning |
H | Mobile processor optimized for performance |
HK | Mobile processor optimized for performance and overclockable |
HQ | Quad-core mobile processor optimized for high performance |
KY | Processor unlocked. overclockable |
S | Special version |
U | Energy efficient mobile processor |
Y | Ultra-low power mobile processor |
BILLION | Moderately Power Optimized Processor |
WOOD | Desktop processors including discrete/integrated graphics |
F | Desktop processors do not include discrete/integrated graphics |
E | Embedded Processor |
G1-G7 | Graphics performance starts with Comet Lake Processors (10th Gen). |
Starting with the H, HK and HQ series of processors, they are commonly found in gaming consoles. Like HK, which stands for high performance, overclockable, there are many processors with mixed keywords like “KF” in desktop processors, which means “overclockable” without discrete graphics”.
For starters, think of overclocking like increasing the base speed of a fuel-powered engine. Higher speeds generate more heat, which can affect engine life, in this case due to the processor.
