New features of Windows 10 21H1 coming soon

Windows 10 May 2021 Update, also known as 21H1, began rolling out in the Preview channel on April 28, 2021. Like update 20H2, this is a small update focused on improvements and security fixes. Major features originally planned for 21H1 have been delayed to 21H2 by the end of 2021.

Another minor update for Windows 10

When Microsoft first released Windows 10, the company released two major updates each year with new features.

In recent years, Microsoft has stopped doing this practice. Microsoft still releases an important update every six months. However, Microsoft released a “major” update with new features in the spring, followed by a smaller update with security and bug fixes in the winter. Just have to change, the more you update, the more errors you get.

For example, in 2020, the May 2020 Update (20H1) is a major update. This is followed by the smaller October 2020 update (20H2).

However, Microsoft is canceling this model. Instead of releasing a small 20H2 update with the larger 21H1 update, Microsoft will release a small update in the spring.

I think Microsoft will release a big update with new features by the end of 2021. It will probably be 21H2, and it’s called the October 2021 Update.

Small updates mean fewer bugs

When it comes to Windows, minor updates aren’t necessarily bad. These minor updates are lightweight and install much faster without long reboots. They focus on fixing bugs and improving security. Microsoft is no longer in a hurry to cram features like My People and Paint 3D into every Windows 10 update.

Windows 10 developers seem serious about this. Here’s how Microsoft’s John Cable, Vice President of Program Management for Windows Distribution and Services, explains:

Windows 10, version 21H1 will have a host of features that improve security, and remote access. The features we’re releasing in this update focus on the core experiences our customers are using most right now. So we’ve optimized this release to support our customers’ most pressing needs.

What’s New in Windows 10’s May 2021 Update?

There is almost nothing new in Windows 10’s 21H1 update. However, Windows is still being worked on with security patches and important bug fixes.

Here’s what Microsoft’s John Cable says we should expect:

• Windows Hello Multicamera support: Once you have both an external and internal Windows Hello Camera on your PC, you can now set the default Camera as your external Camera. Windows Hello is also used to sign in to the PC.
• Windows Defender Application application protection performance: Microsoft has accelerated WDAG, a feature that allows Admins to configure applications to run in a separate virtualized container for security. Microsoft says opening documents in particular will be faster.
• WMI Group Policy Performance: Microsoft has improved the Windows Management Instrumentation (GPSVC) of Group Policy Service (WMI) and made it faster “to support remote work scenarios”.

Posts on Microsoft’s Windows Insider blog added some details on specific situations that have been improved.

What happened to all the new features?

Initially version 21H1 included many new features, such as secure DNS over HTTPS (HTTPS) for all Windows applications.

However, all the features that appeared to be coming in Windows 10’s May 2021 Update have been delayed. You will see the exciting changes coming soon in this article that will be available in version 20H2.
