With Ophcrack, you don’t need any access to Windows to be able to recover your lost password. You just need to download the Ophcrack image file, write to the USB and boot into that USB to use.
After Ophcrack starts, it searches for Windows users and performs password recovery (cracking) — the whole process is automatic.
In testing on a Windows 8 PC, Ophcrack recovered an 8-character (alphanumeric) password for an administrator account in just 3 minutes and 29 seconds.
Ophcrack supports Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. Although I tried using Ophcrack with three very simple passwords on Windows 10, I couldn’t find any passwords.
2. Lazesoft Recover My Password Home
Another way to reset Windows password is to use Lazesoft Recover My Password Home. This software also needs you to install it on a USB to use.
The way this program works is a bit different from others because you have to choose the operating system on which you intend to crack the password. You’ll need to know if the operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit and what the Windows version of the system is.
This program has two main functions; After booting into Lazesoft Recover My Password Home, you will have 2 options: reset Windows password or find Windows keys.
The software supports from Windows 10 and below to Windows 2000. I tested Lazesoft Recover My Password Home in Windows 10 and it reset the 10-character password without any problems.
3. Offline NT Password & Registry Editor
Offline NT Password & Registry Editor works differently from most password recovery programs in that it erases your Windows password instead of recovering it. You can think of it as a Windows password remover.
Like Ophcrack, you must start the software with USB. After running the program, you can log in to your Windows account without entering a password.
I tested Offline NT Password & Registry Editor on 64-bit & 32-bit versions of Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP and it reset the password instantly without issue any. It will also work on Windows 2000 and Windows NT operating systems.
4. Cain & Abel
Cain & Abel is a free, fast and effective Windows password recovery tool. Unlike Ophcrack and other popular Windows password hacking programs, Cain & Abel requires access to Windows with an administrator account. Therefore, this is a tool to recover passwords for other accounts using the one you are using.
Cain & Abel was able to recover the 10-character password for the “Administrator” account on Windows XP in 10 seconds. Although it only officially supports Windows XP, 2000, and NT, some people have been lucky enough to make it work on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
I have tested on Windows 10, 8, 7 and Vista but all failed.
5. Trinity Rescue Kit
Trinity Rescue Kit uses USB to operate. This software includes various tools, one of which is for password recovery.
Use the Trinity Rescue Kit to completely erase the password, empty it, or to set a custom password.
Although the program lacks a graphical interface. However, even if you are not familiar with the command line interface, most of the options are numeric to select different options to reset the password.
Trinity Rescue Kit will work on Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP.
6. John the Ripper
While the password recovery app itself is free, John the Ripper’s options are used to discover passwords, which comes with a mandatory cost for the software to work.
John the Ripper is command-line operated, making it an advanced user-specific password cracking tool.
John the Ripper supports all popular versions of Windows like Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP.
