Why is it necessary to uninstall WSL on Windows 11?

Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is an extremely useful feature for developers and users who need to work side-by-side between two operating systems. However, there will come a time when you no longer need it. Some common reasons include:

You want to free up storage space on your hard drive.

You need to reinstall WSL to fix the problems you are having.

You have finished your work and no longer need to use the environment Linux on Windows.

Whatever the reason, proper removal will ensure your system is clean and leaves no junk files behind.

Instructions for uninstalling WSL on Windows 11

To completely remove WSL, you cannot just uninstall a single application. This process includes three main stages: Uninstalling Linux distributions, removing WSL components and finally disabling related features in Windows.

1. Uninstall Linux distributions

This is the first and most important step. You need to remove all Linux distributions (like Ubuntu, Debian, Kali,…) that you installed through WSL.

First, you need to open the application Settings on Windows 11.

Next, click on the item Apps in the left bar.

Then you choose the page Installed apps.

Here, you find the Linux distribution you want to uninstall (for example, Ubuntu).

You click the menu button (three dots icon) on the right and select Uninstall.

Instructions for uninstalling WSL on Windows 11

Finally, you confirm again by clicking Uninstall.

You need to repeat this process until all Linux distributions have been completely removed from the computer.

2. Remove WSL components

After removing the distros, the next step is to remove core WSL components such as the Linux kernel and GUI components. Previously, you could do this in Settings, but on new versions of Windows 11, this option has been hidden. Therefore, use PowerShell is the most effective way.

Open Start Menu.

Keyword search PowerShellright click on the top result and select Run as administrator.

In the PowerShell window, copy and paste the following command and press Enter:

Get-AppxPackage MicrosoftCorporationII.WindowsSubsystemForLinux | Remove-AppxPackage

Paste the following command and press Enter

This command will find and remove the “Windows Subsystem for Linux” application package from your system.

3. Remove WSL from Windows 11

The final step is to turn off the Windows platform features that make WSL work.

Open again Settings.

Go to section System then select page Optional features.

In the “Related settings” section, click on options More Windows features.

Select More Windows features

A “Windows Features” window will appear. Here, you need to find and uncheck the following two items:

Virtual Machine Platform

Windows Subsystem for Linux

After deselecting, you click the button OK for Windows to begin the uninstallation process.

Finally, the system will ask to reboot, click the button Restart now to complete.

After the computer restarts, Windows Subsystem for Linux will be completely removed from your system.

Conclusion

So, with just a few steps in the right order, you can do it uninstall WSL on Windows 11 completely. This ensures that no WSL components remain on the system, helping your computer become cleaner and operate more stably. If you need it later, you can completely reinstall WSL easily.

After creating User, every time you turn on Linux, it will ask you to enter Username and Password for Kali Linux. You should avoid setting it indiscriminately or you will have to reinstall WSL to change the password.

When you install Linux using WSL on Windows, you are asked to create a username and password. This user will automatically log in when you start Linux on WSL.

Now, the problem is what if you haven’t used it for a long time, forgot your WSL password? And this becomes a big problem if you have to use the sudo command because it requires you to enter a password. So in this article, I will show you how to reset Linux password on WSL.

Reset Linux Password on WSL

To reset your Linux password in WSL, you must:

Change default user to root

Reset password for normal user

Change default user to normal user

Step 1: Switch root to default user

First, you need to record the normal Linux user. As you can see, my usual username is abhishek.

The root user in WSL is unlocked and has no password set. This means you can switch to the root user and then use the power of the root user to reset the Linux password.

Since you don’t remember the account password, switching to the root user will be done by changing the configuration of the WSL Linux application and setting it to use the root user by default.

You can do this through the Windows Command Prompt and the command it takes to run for your Linux distribution.

This information is usually provided in the description of the Linux distribution in the Windows Store. This is where you downloaded your distro.

Open Command Prompt from the Start Menu.

Here use the command you found above of the distro. If you are using Ubuntu apps from the Windows Storeso the command would be:

ubuntu config --default-user root

In the screenshot below, I’m using Ubuntu 20.04 from the Windows Store. So I used the command of ubuntu2004.

To help you out, I’ve listed some distributions and their respective commands below:

Distribution App

Windows Command

Ubuntu

ubuntu config –default-user root

Ubuntu 20.04

ubuntu2004 config –default-user root

Ubuntu 18.04

ubuntu1804 config –default-user root

Debian

debian config –default-user root

Kali Linux

kali config –default-user root

Step 2: Reset Linux password for normal user

Now, if you start the Linux distro, you have to log in as root. You can reset the Linux password for a normal user.

Do you remember the user name in WSL? If not, you can check the /home directory. Once you have the username, use this command:

passwd username

It will ask you to enter a new password. The password you enter will not be displayed on the screen and this is completely normal. You just need to enter the new password and press enter. You will have to re-enter your new password again to confirm.

Congratulations, the password for the user account has been reset. But you’re not done yet. The default user is still root. You need to make the normal user the default, otherwise the distro will continue to log in as the root user.

Step 3: Reset normal user as default

You will need the normal username that you used with the passwd command in the previous step.

Restart Windows Command Prompt. Use your distribution command as you did in step 1. However, this time, replace root with your normal user.

ubuntu config --default-user username

Now, when you start your Linux distribution in WSL, you will be logged in as a normal user. You have reset your new password and can use it to run sudo commands.

If you forget your password again in the future, you can simply reset your Linux password following the steps above.

Is resetting a password too easy dangerous?

Not really. You need to have physical access to the computer along with access to the Windows account. If hackers already have these access rights, they can do more than just change Linux passwords in WSL. So you already know how to reset the Linux password on WSL, good luck.

There are some cool things you can do with the Linux-based command line. Here are three starter projects to incorporate the command line into your daily routine. I’ve ranked these projects from easiest to hardest, but all of these projects are still easy enough for newbies. This is also a great opportunity to see what the command line can do.

This tutorial assumes that you are using Ubuntu as your Linux distribution in WSL. If you are using another Distro, you may have to adapt these commands to your needs. Or, you can install Ubuntu in WSL and follow this article.

Prepare

One of the most important things to do when using Terminal is to update your installed applications and utilities. This requires two simple commands. The first command is:

sudo apt update

Use sudo to temporarily elevate your user account to administrator privileges for this command. Without this privilege, the command will fail. To use sudo, the terminal will ask you for the password you first created when setting up WSL.

The next part, apt (Advanced Package Tool,) is the package manager Ubuntu uses to install programs and utilities. Packages are all files that come together to act as a Linux program or utility. APT is smart enough to not only install the program you want, but also install any dependencies it requires. Dependencies are another program that the program you want to install needs to work.

Finally, is update, an option for APT that allows it to update the list of packages from the repositories your system is using. This is the first step in updating new versions of programs installed in the system. If these software are not updated, your system will not have enough information to take the next step.

The second command is:

sudo apt upgrade -y

-Y is called “flag” and in this case it stands for “yes”. This is an optional command that allows us to skip the annoying system questions.

Now that our system is up to date, we are ready to use some of the tools on the command line.

3 Cool Linux Tools to Run on WSL

Get weather information

The easiest tool to experiment with is to get a graphical overview of the current weather with a three-day forecast using a website called wttr.in. This site reads your IP address to get your approximate location and then provides the weather information back to you in a more user-friendly format in the terminal.

If you want to preview this look, you can also access the website using a regular browser.

For weather you need curl, this program will be installed in your system by default. If not, run the command
sudo apt install curl
to install curl.

In a few seconds you will have a weather forecast for your location similar to what you see in the image above.

Another trick is to set up your system so that every time you open Terminal, it shows the latest weather forecast. You can do that by adding command write command
curl wttr.in
at the beginning of the .bashrc file.

Get MLB Points in Terminal

I constantly open Terminal and sometimes don’t want to go to Google for the latest Yankees match information. Instead, I write a reliable Python script to get all the information I need.

If you have installed the latest version of Ubuntu for WSL then you already have Python 3, this is what we need for this. You can double-check this by typing
python3 --version
this command will tell you the version of Python 3 you have in your system.

Now, let’s get to work. The first thing you need is a set of helper scripts that will get all the baseball data we want. It’s called statsapi, a community-based Python application that installs using PIP3. Like APT, PIP3 is a package manager, but only for programs written in Python.

First we need to install it using the command
sudo apt install python3-pip -y
. Once done, execute the following command:

pip3 install MLB-StatsAPI

Now, we can get baseball scores based on statsapi. The script is in the GitHub repository (the repository is just a place to store the code), where I have a bunch of scripts that can get information about the current baseball season.

First, create a new folder named “bin” with the command
mkdir bin
. The mkdir command literally means “make directory”. Then change that directory with
cd bin
(“cd” means change directory). “Bin” is the common name for directories containing scripts and executables (binaries) in a Linux environment, but you can name the folder however you like.

Now, we will download the script with “wget”:

wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ianpaul/Baseball_Scores/master/ballgame.py

This downloads a script called ballgame.py from the repository. The file extension “py” denotes that this is a Python script.

Now, all we have to do is run our Python script with the python command:

python3 ~/bin/ballgame.py

This command tells Terminal to use Python 3 to run the script. ~/ Means go to home directory then go to bin directory in home and open ballgame.py script.

After you run the above command, the script will ask for the name of the team you’re interested in, then ask if you want to see box points or line points. Once selected, you will receive match information in a terminal-friendly format.

Remember that this script is set up to give you the results of the completed match. It will not provide scores of ongoing matches.

Twitter on Terminal

There are several applications that can feed your Twitter feed to the command line. What’s cool about this approach is that it reduces Twitter to its purest form, and it makes the experience a bit simpler.

A really good Twitter CLI application is Rainbow Stream, which is based on Python and requires some of the tools we used in the previous steps. First, we need to make sure we have all the dependencies that Rainbow Stream requires:

sudo apt install python3-dev libjpeg libjpeg-dev libfreetype6 libfreetype6-dev zlib1g-dev

I won’t explain what all these tools are. If you want to know, you can search them on Google. Each widget is separated by a space.

Now let’s install Rainbow Stream:

sudo pip3 install rainbowstream

This will take a few minutes as Rainbow Stream installs itself.

Now, make sure you’re signed in to Twitter in your web browser. Then, to activate the program, type rainbowstream into the terminal.

Next, Rainbow Stream will open a web browser tab so you can allow the app to access your Twitter account. In some cases, this process will happen automatically. Otherwise, just copy and paste the following URL into your web browser. The URL usually looks like this: https://api.twitter.com/oauth/authorize?oauth_token=XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Highlight that URL, right-click to copy, and then paste it in your web browser. Twitter will ask you to allow Rainbow Stream to grant the app access to your account, and then Twitter will provide a seven-digit PIN. Enter that PIN in the terminal where Rainbow Stream is waiting for the code and that’s it. Your tweets will now appear on the command line in a few minutes.

Rainbow Stream is pretty easy to use, but it requires a few commands. Typing “t here is my tweet” and pressing Enter on your keyboard will post a tweet.

Each of your tweets will have an id number, such as “id:8”. Import
rt 8
will repost that tweet. Import
quote 8
allows you to quote that tweet and another tweet and add your own comments. There are many other commands that you can read about in the Rainbow Stream documentation.

As with many other command line programs, you can also type
h
anytime to get help within the app.

If you find that Unicode characters do not display correctly, the easiest solution is to install Windows Terminal from the Windows Store.

Using the command line takes a little more work than installing a regular program, but it can also be a very powerful, useful, and fun tool to use.

This is perfectly fine for many people, but there’s always a good reason you’d want to use the latest version, especially during development. If you need Ubuntu 21.10, and don’t want to have to reboot or create virtual machines; then you can easily install it on Windows 10 or 11.

How to get Ubuntu 21.10 for WSL

Getting Ubuntu 21.10 for WSL isn’t difficult, but it doesn’t have an obvious place to download either. You can upgrade inside WSL to the latest version, but in the case of 21.10 you need to use 21.04.

But here I will download the image file and install a brand new build of Ubuntu 21.10.

To get the files you need, go to Ubuntu website and follow these steps.

1. Click the option labeled impish.

2. Next, click current.

3. Find the files labeled wsl.rootfs.tar.gz.

There will be many files, but those that are labeled with the file manifest you can skip. You also need to choose the right version for your PC. If you are using a machine supported by Intel or AMD, choose the amd64 version. If you are using an ARM-based machine, choose the arm64 version.

Download the relevant files, and then install.

How to Install Ubuntu 21.10 on WSL for Windows 10 and 11

From now on, you’ll be in your PowerShell. Make a note of where you downloaded the tar file from the steps above as you will need the file location for the installation.

The installation starts with importing the downloaded image from Ubuntu into your WSL.

Inside PowerShell, you will need to enter the following command to import and install Ubuntu 21.10:

wsl --import <name> <location to unpack> <location of download>

On my system, the command would look like this:

wsl --import Ubuntu-2110 c:/WSL/Ubuntu-2110 c:/Downloads/impish-server-cloudimg-amd64-wsl.rootfs.tar.gz

It doesn’t really matter where you extract and install the image, but it’s a good idea to create a dedicated folder, especially if you’re going to install multiple distributions this way.

Alternatively, you can specify a WSL version at the end with the –version flag. It will install to any version of WSL that your system recognizes as default, but you can change that version during installation to avoid having to switch it later. Just add 1 or 2 after the flag to specify the version you require.

It will take a few minutes, but once it’s done, you can move on to setup. Since this feature has not been installed from the Microsoft Store, there is no application shortcut created in the Start Menu. You will need to launch it manually with the command:

wsl -d <distroname>

However, if you use Windows Terminal and you do, WSL will automatically add it to the drop-down menu along with all the other shells you can open.

Basic Setup of Ubuntu 21.10

When you install Ubuntu 21.10, it basically doesn’t run through the initial setup process you get when you install Ubuntu from the Microsoft Store. So you won’t have a user set up, there will only be root. So you need to create a new user and add it to the sudo group:

adduser <yourusername>
usermod -aG sudo <yourusername>

And switch to that user with:

su <yourusername>

To launch into Ubuntu 21.10 as your new user, from PowerShell, type:

wsl -d <distroname> -u <yourusername>

While it shouldn’t be a long process to switch to or enter your new settings as your user instead of root, it’s always better to automate the process. Configuring the default user for a distro installed this way is slightly different from one downloaded from the Store.

There are a few different ways you can deal with this, but the easiest and safest way is to edit the wsl.conf file on your distribution to require WSL to log in with a user account instead of root. Open Ubuntu 21.10 and navigate to the file like below. The file might not exist on first install, so set it up and since you’ll want to log in as root and not your user account.

In terminal, type cd /etc/

Import ls to list files. If you don’t have wsl.confwe can create file wsl.conf.

Import
touch wsl.conf
.

Open the wsl.conf file with
nano wsl.conf
.

You will now need to enter the necessary information to tell Ubuntu 21.10 to launch as user and not as root. Enter the following command in the document.

# Set the user when launching a distribution with WSL.
[user]
default=YourUserName

The first line is optional, but you should keep comments throughout your wsl.conf file to remind you of the functionality of each section.

Exit nano by pressing Ctrl + Xthen press Y and Enter to save the file. Close WSL completely, leave it alone for a few seconds, then the next time you reboot Ubuntu 21.10 you will be the user, not the root.

Alternatively, if you’re using Windows Terminal, open Settingsfind your Ubuntu 21.10 installation in the sidebar and in command linemake sure this command is cached:

wsl.exe -d <distroname> -u <yourusername>

It’s a bit more step-by-step than installing from the Microsoft Store, but not too difficult.

In some cases, such as Ubuntu, you can install the latest release with the official image. But you can also look to the WSL community for support, and that’s exactly the case for anyone who wants to install Linux Mint right now.

Thanks to a project on GitHub, it will now be very easy to install Linux Mint into WSL and moreover, it already supports the latest version, Linux Mint 20.3.

How to Install Linux Mint on WSL

Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution and is undoubtedly one of the most popular choices today, often hailed as the perfect place to start moving to Linux. Of course, using Linux in WSL is a bit different than just uploading it to a PC.

So if you want to use it on WSL you will need to use a community project called LinuxmintWSL. It is stored at GitHub. It’s also only built for WSL 2, so if you don’t have WSL 2 installed then maybe read this post. However, it supports both Intel/AMD and ARM machines, so Windows users on ARM won’t be left out.

On the GitHub repository, go to the release page and download the latest package. Once downloaded, extract the zip file to the directory where you want to run it, then simply run Mint.exe. Unlike installing the latest releases of Ubuntu from one of the official images, it has been bundled up to be more similar to the distributions you would download from the Microsoft Store.

It will take a few seconds (or longer depending on your hardware) for the installation to complete, but the installer does not require any interaction from you. It will open a command line window and when done you will be asked to press Enter. Then the command line window will close.

If you use Windows Terminal, Mint will now show up in a drop-down menu to launch the next time you load it. Otherwise, you can launch it through PowerShell like any other Linux distro with this command:

wsl -d Mint

By default, you’ll only have root access, so you’ll need to do some basic setup before you get started.

How to Setup Linux Mint on WSL

Enter Mint into the terminal using one of the methods above. You should see a basic prompt starting with root@. As with any other Linux distribution on WSL, you will need to add a user to Mint with the appropriate permissions before doing anything. You also don’t have a password, so you’ll need to add one before you begin.

In the terminal, type:

passwd

Follow the prompts to set the root password. Next, we will add a user with the command:

useradd -m <username>

And create a password for the new user:

passwd <username>

Again, follow the prompts to add your password.

The next step is to add the right permissions for your user to be able to use the sudo command, otherwise you will get an error. We can do this by typing:

usermod -aG sudo <yourusername>

Then you can switch to your user with the command:

su <username>

The next thing to do is to make sure that when you launch Mint if you want to be a user and not a root (recommended) you have to configure it so that you don’t have to do it manually every time you open Mint. There are two ways to do this, the first is with the wsl.conf file and the second is by configuring the Windows Terminal.

You won’t have the wsl.conf file when you first set up Linux Mint, so we’ll need to create it and enter the appropriate settings. In the terminal, type:

nano /etc/wsl.conf

Nano text editor will now open a new blank file. Enter this command in the file:

# Set the user when launching a distribution with WSL.
[user]
default=YourUserName

Press Ctrl + X, then Y, then Enter to save and exit. Close your Linux Mint instance, wait a few seconds, then on relaunch you are logged in as the user.

Alternatively, if you’re using Windows Terminal, open Settingsfind your Linux Mint installation, then in the box command line make sure this command is cached:

wsl.exe -d <distroname> -u <yourusername>

This command should have the same effect after closing and rebooting. However, setting up the wsl.conf file is better, as it ensures you are always logged in as the user. If you use the Windows Terminal settings and open Linux Mint via PowerShell, you will be root.

Linux Mint is now set up on WSL for you to use just like any other distro you install through the Microsoft Store. You can see some GUI applications have also appeared in the Start Menu that comes with the standard installation of Linux Mint, but all those applications can be removed if you do not want.

Additionally, you can run multiple instances of Linux Mint on WSL. For each subsequent installation, simply change the name of the Mint.exe file from the beginning of this tutorial to something else, then run it again. The new version will be set up with the changed filename.
