The problem of ants and electronics is a long-standing problem. Ants tend to build homes in warm and compact spaces, which is why they love laptops and PCs.

With an estimated 10 billion billion ants on the planet, this problem is much more common than you might think.

Prevention is better than cure

Ants will search your house for two things: food and water. Since your computer is not a source of moisture, food can be a major cause of ant-related problems.

Laptops and keyboards in particular can get food debris between the keys. Spilling sugary and alcoholic beverages near or on the keyboard can also be a problem as you can’t get rid of all the liquid without removing the key (you can also try using a hair dryer to dry the keyboard).

One simple step you can take is to avoid eating food near your laptop or keyboard. For peace of mind, don’t even leave food in the same room as your computer. Ants won’t last long in an environment without food and drink.

Simple ways to deal with ants

If you notice ants clinging to the connection ports of your laptop, case, or handle, this could be a sign of a much larger problem.

You can purchase ant repellents and other products, but be aware that you need to call in professionals to deal with large ant colonies.

Ants will leave scent trails for other ants to follow, a phenomenon you can see by watching them move across the surface of a wall or table. Removing these stains with a 1:3 mixture of white vinegar and water (or cleaning spray) can make it harder for them to find their way back to your desk or computer.

Failure to handle the main source of ants in your home is failure. Any effort you put in to solve the problems in your electronics may be in vain as the ants will keep coming back.

Getting ants out of your computer

If your problems are relatively minor, there are a few ways you can try to solve them before things get out of hand. You should try if you notice a few ants coming in and out of ports or around your computer.

You can try to pick up your laptop and shake it vigorously from any charge, this will affect the ants inside. And these ants will want to get out of that environment as quickly as possible, and they will be able to find their way out due to the scent trails they leave when they arrive. You can try this a few times and observe the results.

Another option is to use the heat inside your laptop to make the ants so uncomfortable they want to leave. You can stress test the system to make the laptop work at full capacity and generate high temperatures.

On a Windows laptop, you can play games and increase the graphics, or Blender and try rendering some demo files, or use PowerShell to stress test 100% CPU.

On Mac and Linux this is possible using the UNIX . command yes. Simply launch a Terminal window, run yes and wait. You can launch a few more windows to get the fan spinning. Close the Terminal window to end the stress test.

Some users recommend blocking the heatsink holes and ports on the laptop. But I advise you to think carefully before deliberately heating the device in this way. It can void your warranty and damage the hardware inside the laptop.
While it’s true that ants like warm spaces, they can’t regulate their internal body heat, meaning they don’t thrive in very hot conditions. This will let the ants know that a place that is too hot will not be suitable for nesting.

Coping with bigger problems

If the condition becomes more severe, you may see a lot of ants moving in the vents and ports. The ants that come and go are usually ants that go in search of food and water to bring back to the colony. If you see ants carrying stuff into your laptop, there may be queens or eggs inside your computer.

It’s probably best to do this on a nice dry day. Some guides recommend vacuuming your computer to keep ants out, but you need to be careful with this because dust particles sucked into the machine can cause a build-up (and discharge) of static electricity.

Instead, carefully disconnect or remove the battery (or remove the power cable on the desktop) and use a soft plastic tool to remove any eggs you find. Ants will immediately run away when you open the case, but you can also use an air compressor to blow them up.
Air compressors can be dangerous when used near sensitive objects (such as propellers) so be careful. After you do a swarm of ants, they are still likely to come back because the queen ant is still on your computer. So, clean your computer periodically to avoid similar problems.
